Alpha Arbutin

Alpha arbutin is a synthetically stabilised derivative of arbutin, a compound found naturally in bearberry, cranberry and several other plants. It has been evaluated in cosmetic research for its association with visible tone evenness over consistent use. Alpha arbutin is generally considered more stable than naturally-derived beta arbutin, allowing for more consistent performance in finished formulas.

Alpha arbutin is evaluated as a tone-support option with a comparatively gentle tolerability profile relative to some other brightening actives, making it relevant for formulas targeting visible tone evenness without the irritation potential of higher-strength acids.
Where concentration matters
Cosmetic alpha arbutin formulas are typically studied at 1–2%. Concentrations significantly above this range have not consistently demonstrated proportionally greater cosmetic benefit in published research.

We do not claim that alpha arbutin treats melasma or any diagnosed pigmentation disorder, or that it functions as a depigmenting drug. Alpha arbutin is evaluated for its visible tone-evenness contribution in a cosmetic context only.

Alpha arbutin pairs well with niacinamide for layered tone support, and benefits from consistent daytime SPF use, since UV exposure can offset visible tone-evenness progress.
