Function in skin biology
Bakuchiol is a compound extracted from the seeds and leaves of Psoralea corylifolia. It is structurally unrelated to retinoids but has been studied for producing some comparable cosmetic outcomes — a small number of published comparative studies have evaluated bakuchiol against retinol for visible skin texture and tolerability, generally reporting fewer reports of irritation, scaling and photosensitivity than retinol in those specific studies.

Bakuchiol is evaluated as an option for users who want a retinoid-adjacent formula step without the photosensitivity profile of retinol — making it potentially suitable for daytime use, unlike retinoids. It is not treated by Ambernay as functionally identical to retinol; the evidence base for bakuchiol is smaller and the mechanism of action is not the same.
Where concentration matters
Cosmetic bakuchiol formulas are typically studied at concentrations between 0.5% and 2%. As a newer ingredient relative to retinoids, the concentration-response relationship is less established in the published literature.

We do not claim that bakuchiol is interchangeable with retinol, delivers identical results, or carries the decades of clinical research behind vitamin A derivatives. We do not claim it treats any diagnosed skin condition.
Best paired with
Bakuchiol's improved tolerability and lower photosensitivity profile relative to retinol make it more flexible for daytime inclusion, though SPF remains essential regardless of which actives are used. It is generally well tolerated alongside niacinamide and barrier-supportive moisturisers.
