Regulated cosmetic actives — SPF and broad-spectrum UV protection


Function in skin biology

UV filters are cosmetic actives regulated under EU Cosmetics Regulation Annex VI. They function by absorbing, reflecting or scattering UV radiation before it reaches the skin. Two types exist: organic (chemical) filters, which absorb UV energy and dissipate it as heat, and inorganic (mineral) filters — primarily zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — which reflect and scatter UV. Most modern broad-spectrum sunscreens use a combination of both types to achieve coverage across the full UVA and UVB spectrum.

Why Ambernay uses it

UV protection is the only cosmetic intervention with consistent, long-term evidence supporting visible skin ageing prevention. Ambernay's UV Shield SPF 50 PA++++ was formulated with this in mind: the objective is not aesthetic first — it is daily photoprotection, delivered in a formula that integrates into a morning routine without compromising feel or skin compatibility. Filter selection, PPD ratio, photostability and application weight were all design criteria.

Where concentration matters

SPF value is a function of filter type, filter concentration, photostability under UV exposure, the vehicle that delivers the filter to skin and — critically — the amount applied. Most consumers apply sunscreen at 25–50% of the amount used in SPF testing (2 mg/cm²). This means a product labelled SPF 50 may deliver significantly lower real-world protection at typical application volumes. Ambernay communicates this directly rather than relying on label numbers alone.

PA++++ indicates the highest UVA protection rating under the Japanese/Asian grading system — equivalent to a UVA-PF of 16 or above. Broad-spectrum protection requires deliberate filter architecture, not simply a high SPF number.

What we do not claim

We do not claim that UV Shield prevents skin cancer, treats photodamage or reverses UV-induced changes. We do not claim SPF alone is sufficient sun safety behaviour. Daily SPF use is one component of evidence-led UV protection — alongside adequate application volume, reapplication and appropriate shade behaviour.

UV Shield is applied as the final morning step, after moisturiser. Layering order matters for both efficacy and feel: humectants and emollients first, UV filter last. Do not dilute the formula by mixing it with other products immediately before application.

Claim caution / regulatory note

UV filters are regulated ingredients under EU Annex VI (Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009) and by the FDA in the United States (OTC monograph system). Only approved filters may be used at or below their maximum permitted concentrations. SPF and UVA claims are subject to specific testing protocols (ISO 24444, ISO 24443). Ambernay's UV Shield has been tested to these standards.
