Winter skin barrier: what actually changes in cold weather

Winter skin is a common experience — tightness, dryness, increased reactivity, visible flaking. The explanation is often reduced to "cold air dries out skin." This is partially true but incomplete. What actually changes in cold weather involves several interacting factors, and understanding them informs more effective skincare decisions.

What changes in cold weather

Reduced sebum production

Sebaceous gland activity is temperature-sensitive. In cold conditions, sebum production decreases, reducing the skin's natural emollient supply. This is particularly significant for skin types that are not oily — dry and combination skin may lose a meaningful part of their natural barrier lipid contribution.

Lower ambient humidity

Cold air holds less water vapour. Outdoors in winter, relative humidity drops. Indoors, heating systems further reduce humidity. Low humidity reverses the mechanism of humectants in a surface-applied product: instead of drawing moisture from the air, a humectant in low-humidity conditions may draw water from deeper skin layers toward the surface, where it evaporates more readily. This is why humectants alone without occlusive support are less effective in winter.

Altered lipid composition of the stratum corneum

Cold temperature affects the phase behaviour of stratum corneum lipids — the ceramide, fatty acid and cholesterol matrix that forms the intercellular barrier. In very cold conditions, lipid organisation changes in ways that can reduce barrier cohesion and increase permeability. This is measurable as elevated TEWL in winter months, independent of dryness sensation.

Increased exposure to irritants

Winter conditions often involve increased contact with irritating factors: wool and synthetic fibres against skin, indoor heating particulates, more frequent handwashing (cold and flu season). These cumulative irritants lower the effective tolerance threshold even in non-sensitive skin.

What this means for product use

In winter, the same routine that works in summer may become insufficient. Specifically:

  • A lighter humectant-based moisturiser may need to be supplemented with a richer emollient or occlusive layer
  • SPF remains relevant year-round — UVA radiation does not decrease significantly in winter and penetrates cloud cover
  • Reduction of exfoliating actives during acute barrier stress is often appropriate
  • Application volume of leave-on products may need to increase slightly to compensate for reduced sebum
