Humectants, emollients and occlusives: the architecture of moisturisation

The word "moisturiser" covers a broad and inconsistent range of products. Understanding the three functional categories of moisturisation — humectants, emollients and occlusives — explains why moisturisers perform differently and why application sequence and formula architecture matter.

Humectants: drawing water in

Humectants are hygroscopic — they attract and hold water molecules. In a skincare formula, they draw moisture from the deeper layers of the epidermis into the stratum corneum, helping maintain hydration where it matters for skin feel and function. At high ambient humidity, they can also draw moisture from the air. Common examples: glycerin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA.

Humectants are most effective when applied to slightly damp skin and when followed by an emollient or occlusive layer that prevents the moisture they have drawn in from evaporating.

Emollients: texture, feel, softness

Emollients fill the micro-gaps between skin cells in the stratum corneum, smoothing the surface and improving tactile quality. They do not primarily increase water content — they improve how skin feels and how the formula spreads. Common examples: squalane, isopropyl myristate, fatty alcohols, plant-derived oils, dimethicone.

The emollient selection in a formula determines texture: whether a moisturiser absorbs quickly or sits on skin, whether it feels dry or rich, whether it layers well under SPF. This is a formulation decision, not just an ingredient preference.

Occlusives: reducing water loss

Occlusives form a physical layer on the skin surface that slows transepidermal water loss (TEWL). They do not add water — they prevent water already in the skin from escaping. The most effective occlusive in cosmetic formulation is petrolatum. Other examples: beeswax, lanolin, shea butter, dimethicone at higher concentrations.

Occlusive weight in a formula must be calibrated to skin type and use context. A heavy occlusive fraction is appropriate for dry or compromised barrier skin; it is counterproductive in daily formulas for normal or combination skin that will be layered with SPF.

How layering order affects outcomes

Applying a humectant after an occlusive is largely ineffective — the occlusive layer prevents the humectant from reaching the skin surface where it can function. The correct sequence in a layered routine is: humectant first, emollient, occlusive (if present), then SPF as the final step in the morning.

Single-product moisturisers that aim to deliver all three functions in one formula must balance these interactions carefully — which is why formula architecture is a more relevant indicator of moisturiser efficacy than individual ingredient claims.
