SPF 50 vs SPF 50+: what the label really means

SPF 50 and SPF 50+ appear on sunscreen labels across different markets and are sometimes treated as interchangeable. They are not. Understanding the distinction clarifies what protection labels communicate and what they do not.

What SPF measures

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB radiation — the portion of the UV spectrum primarily responsible for sunburn. The test uses a standardised methodology (ISO 24444 in the EU; FDA in vitro or in vivo methods in the US) and involves applying 2 mg/cm² of product to the skin before UV exposure. The result is a ratio: how much longer skin takes to redden with the product versus without.

SPF 30 filters approximately 97% of UVB; SPF 50 filters approximately 98%; SPF 100 approximately 99%. The increments above SPF 50 are small in absolute UVB filtering terms.

SPF 50 vs SPF 50+

In most European markets, SPF values are capped at "50+" for labelling purposes. Any product testing at SPF 60, 70 or above is labelled as SPF 50+, not with its actual tested value. This is a regulatory standardisation decision, not a product limitation.

In some Asian markets (Japan, Korea, China), actual SPF values above 50 may appear on the label. This is why the same formula can carry different SPF numbers in different markets — the product has not changed, only the labelling convention.

What PA++++ means

PA (Protection Grade of UVA) is a Japanese grading system based on the Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) method, which evaluates UVA protection. PA++++ is the highest grade, indicating a UVA-PF (UVA Protection Factor) of 16 or above. It requires a separate test to SPF — broad-spectrum protection requires deliberate UVA filter inclusion, not just a high SPF rating.

The application weight problem

The most important gap in SPF communication is application volume. SPF testing applies 2 mg/cm² — roughly half a teaspoon for the face alone. Consumer application studies consistently show application at 0.5–1 mg/cm². At half the application weight, a product labelled SPF 50 may deliver the equivalent of approximately SPF 7. This is not a product failure. It is a usage failure — and it is rarely communicated clearly on SPF packaging or in brand marketing.
